Title
Understanding Therapist Self-Disclosure: The Basics and Best Practices

Presenter Information
Ashley E. Wadsworth, MS, NCC, LCMHC (Doctoral Candidate, Capella University)
With
Dr. Daniel Williamson & Dr. Jennifer Nivin Williamson

Program Summary
Therapist self-disclosure (TSD) is utilized as a therapeutic intervention by more than
90% of therapists. Despite the largely positive effects of TSD in the therapeutic
environment, TSD as a therapeutic intervention is still a largely controversial debate in
the profession. This presentation seeks to provide foundational knowledge of TSD while
describing how the use of TSD can be beneficial and where it can be harmful.
Participants will also learn the best practice recommendations for utilizing TSD as a
therapeutic intervention based on a synthesis of the literature. Lastly, case scenarios
will be presented to simulate practical applications of TSD to help solidify the concepts
learned in the presentation.

Learning Objectives
1. Review and become familiar with the basic components of TSD, including (a) the
types of TSD, (b) the purpose of TSD, (c) the content of TSD, (d) mitigating
unavoidable TSD, (e) the ethics of TSD, and (f) evaluating outcomes of TSD
2. Explore the utilization of TSD with culturally diverse clients.
3. Examine best practice recommendations associated with the use of TSD as a
therapeutic intervention.
4. Review practical applications of TSD through case demonstrations.
